On the opening of the 2019 Design for Transition International Conference IV hosted at Jiangnan University from Oct. 24th to Oct. 26th, 2019, Jiangnan University proposed for the Design 2030 Initiative, aiming to call for actions in the exploration of a sustainable design education for the future, and is supported by professors from 23 universities and institutions from countries including China, US, Canada, Italy, Japan, UK, Denmark, Australia, Singapore, India, Chile, and Iran.

Sustainable development is a common challenge in the era of globalization and an inevitable way to achieve sustainable society and universal happiness for mankind. In September 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which set the direction for the development and international cooperation of all countries in the world and outlined the blueprint. In respond to that, initiated by Vice president Professor Zhang Linghao, Jiangnan University, proposes in the planning of the international conference to take actions to this common challenge to initiate the proposal for global institution to jointly promote the 2030 agenda.
On October 24th, the first Sustainable Development Forum was held in Beijing, with an aim to address the efforts of all China people to contribute to the development concept of innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing, to promote the high-quality development of China's economy and comprehensively implement the 2030 sustainable development agenda. At the same time, at Jiangnan University, the 2019 Design for Transition International Conference Preconference Design 2030 was held for discussions and exchange of ideas on sustainable development and design innovation, design education, and negotiating the specific contents of the proposal.

The Design 2030 Proposal emphasizes the value of design innovation and design education under the new situation and challenges of global sustainable development, and proposes key topics for future sustainable design education exploration, including exploring innovative models, exploring cultural values, promoting exchanges and cooperation, and strengthening personnel training, and improve social impact. The purpose of the initiative is to appeal to design schools and educators around the world, to embrace the social responsibility and mission of design education, to respond to the UN 2030 agenda, to build a “Design 2030” educational collaboration network, and to jointly explore sustainable design education for the future, to make positive efforts for the sustainable development of the community of human destiny!

Design 2030: An Initiative to Explore Sustainable Design Education for the Future
Sustainable development is a common challenge in the era of globalization and an inevitable way to achieve sustainable society and universal wellbeing of mankind. In September 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Summit adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which provides guidance and blueprint for the development and cooperation of all countries. The 2030 Agenda has been actively responded by countries around the world, reflecting the aspirations of the international community and people of all countries.
In the face of the blueprint and goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, how can design fully play its roles? How can design education responds effectively? Those topics have called widespread concerns. Although there has been long term and fruitful research, teaching and practical investigation on sustainable design before, we recognize well that there are still more efforts to be done in the future. To this end, professors from 23 design schools and universities at home and abroad jointly launch this initiative, proposing the key issues for exploring sustainable design education for the future:
1. Exploring innovation models: how can we take the opportunities for wide transformations today? In face of sustainability challenges with increasing complex, how can we build an interdisciplinary paradigm to integrate sustainable design into emerging technology, business and social innovation?
2. excavating culture values: how to balance the relationship between global crisis and local solutions? Based on the historical and cultural resources of different regions and nations, how can we trace and share the sustainable design values for global society?
3. Promoting cooperation and exchange: how can we promote the extensive communication and cooperation among design colleges? How can joint research, joint curriculum and summer schools for sustainable design be promoted through international and local collaboration mechanisms?
4. Strengthening curriculum reform: how can we strengthen teaching system of sustainable design? How can we embody the principles, methods and tools of sustainable design in the objectives, programs and plans for different levels of design education?
5. Increasing social impact: how can we play better the advantages of design schools in wide social learning process? As a design education institution, how to participate more public services on sustainable development such as those for primary and secondary schools and communities?
We launch this open initiative to all design educational institutions and educators in global, adhering to social responsibility and era missions, and in response to the UN 2030 Agenda, to build "Design 2030" Education Network, to explore the future of sustainable design education, and to make positive efforts for sustainability of a community of shared future for mankind.
