Reflections on Practice and Research

Reflections on Practice and Research

Lecture Topic: Reflections on Practice and Research

Speaker: Camilla Groth

Lecture Time: May 08, 2019, 13:30-16:00

Lecture Address: A112 Lecture Hall at School of Design

Introduction:

Compared to other disciplines, design and art research is new. In the 1980s, with the "Design---Science---Methods" conference organized by the Design Research Society, design research began to explore the particularity of design knowledge itself. By the end of the 20th century, important journals on design research and design methodology had emerged, such as the “Design Studies”, which was published in 1979, and the “Design Issues”, which was published in 1984.

As a ceramic practitioner-researcher Camilla will introduce some practice-led research methods and explore the differences between practice and academic research. In the second part of the session she will run a short workshop for master students to kick off their thinking and formulating ideas for their master thesis.

Introduction of the speaker:

Camilla is a ceramic artist, researcher, and teacher. She studied ceramics and glass at the Helsinki University of Art and Design (now Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture) in 1999. She received her master's degree from the Royal College of Art in 2001 and her PhD from Aalto University in 2017. She is currently as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

She also holds an Associate professorship at the University of Southeastern Norway. Her main research interests are practice-led research methods and embodied cognition in design.

If you are also passionate about practice and research in art and design, welcome to listen.
